Orange County Dump and Transfer Station Guide (2026 Locations, Hours, Fees)
Orange County Dump and Transfer Station Guide (2026 Locations, Hours, Fees)
Orange County has only two landfills open to the public for self-haul disposal: Olinda Alpha in Brea and Prima Deshecha in San Juan Capistrano. That surprises a lot of people. With nearly 3.2 million residents and 34 cities, you’d think there would be more options. But those are the two, and knowing how they work before you load up your truck will save you time, money, and at least one U-turn.
We put this guide together because we get the question constantly: “Where’s the closest dump?” and “How much does it cost?” We’re EA Junk Removal — we’ve been hauling junk across Orange County since 2018 — so we’ve been to these facilities hundreds of times. Here’s everything you need to know, updated for 2026.
Active OC Landfills Open to the Public
OC Waste & Recycling operates three active landfills, but only two accept waste from the general public. Frank R. Bowerman in Irvine is restricted to commercial haulers with a valid Orange County business license or California contractor’s license — you can’t just pull up with a pickup truck. Bee Canyon, which sits on the Bowerman property, is a composting greenery, not a dump.
That leaves Olinda Alpha and Prima Deshecha as your two options for self-haul disposal.

The 2026 Fee Increase: What It Means for You
Starting July 1, 2026, OC landfill disposal rates jump from roughly $44 per ton to $67 per ton — a 53% increase. The flat fee for small loads in cars and SUVs triples from $5 to $15. These rates are projected to continue climbing to around $81 per ton by 2029.
What does this mean in real terms? A single truckload of household junk typically weighs between 1,000 and 3,000 pounds. At $67/ton, that’s $33 to $100 just in dump fees — before factoring in your time, gas, truck rental if you don’t own one, and the physical labor of loading everything yourself.
What the Landfills Won’t Accept
Both Olinda Alpha and Prima Deshecha refuse certain materials. Showing up with a load that includes prohibited items means you either separate it on the spot (not fun) or take it back home.
- Hazardous waste — paint, solvents, pesticides, motor oil, antifreeze, pool chemicals, batteries, fluorescent bulbs (take these to an HHW center instead)
- E-waste — TVs, monitors, computers, tablets, cell phones (HHW centers accept these for free)
- Tires — most landfills don’t accept tires; check with the facility or a tire recycler
- Medical/biohazardous waste — sharps, pharmaceuticals, biomedical waste
- Radioactive materials and explosives
If you’re not sure whether your stuff is accepted, call OC Waste & Recycling at (714) 834-4000 before loading up.
Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Drop-Off Centers
Orange County operates four permanent HHW collection centers where residents can drop off paint, chemicals, batteries, e-waste, motor oil, and other hazardous materials completely free. All four are open Tuesday through Saturday, 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Closed Sundays, Mondays, major holidays, and during rainy weather.
| HHW Center | Address | Hours | Accepts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Anaheim | 1071 N. Blue Gum St, Anaheim, CA 92806 | Tue–Sat, 9 AM – 3 PM | Paint, solvents, pesticides, batteries, motor oil, e-waste, fluorescent bulbs, antifreeze, pool chemicals |
| Huntington Beach | 17121 Nichols Ln (Gate 6), Huntington Beach, CA 92647 | Tue–Sat, 9 AM – 3 PM | Same as above |
| Irvine | 6411 Oak Canyon, Irvine, CA 92618 | Tue–Sat, 9 AM – 3 PM | Same as above |
| San Juan Capistrano | 32250 Avenida La Pata, San Juan Capistrano, CA 92675 | Tue–Sat, 9 AM – 3 PM | Same as above |
Proof of Orange County residency may be required. These centers do not accept waste from businesses, schools, churches, or non-profits — residential only.
Free Mattress Recycling
Here’s something most people don’t know: if you bring only mattresses (no mixed waste in the same load), both Olinda Alpha and Prima Deshecha will accept them for free. This is through OC Waste & Recycling’s mattress recycling program. If your mattress is mixed in with other junk, standard disposal fees apply to the whole load.
Free Bulky-Item Pickup by City
Before you rent a truck or drive to the landfill, check whether your city offers free curbside bulky-item pickup. Most OC cities include this in your trash service — you just have to schedule it.
| City | Free Pickups per Year | Items per Pickup | How to Schedule |
|---|---|---|---|
| Anaheim | 3 | Up to 20 items | Call Republic Services |
| Irvine | 4 | Up to 4 large items | Call hauler 48 hrs in advance |
| Huntington Beach | 4 | Up to 10 items | Call hauler |
| City of Orange | 6 | Up to 4 items | Call CR&R at (714) 372-8272 |
| Buena Park | 3 | Up to 6 items | Call EDCO at (714) 522-3577 |
| Cypress | 2 | Varies | Call Valley Vista |
| Unincorporated OC | 2 | Up to 4 items | Call your assigned hauler |
Not every city is listed here — if yours isn’t, call your trash hauler or check your city’s public works website. Nearly every OC city offers some version of this program.
Tips for a Smooth Dump Run
- Go early. Lines are shortest right when the gates open at 7 AM. Saturday afternoons are the worst.
- Secure your load. California law requires all loads to be covered or secured. You can get a ticket on the way there, and the landfill can turn you away.
- Separate hazardous items before you leave. One can of old paint mixed into your load can cause problems at the gate.
- Bring ID. They may ask for proof of Orange County residency.
- Check the fee schedule before July 1. If you’re planning a big cleanout, doing it before the rate hike saves real money.
- Know what you’re paying. Your vehicle gets weighed going in and going out. The fee is based on the weight difference. Small loads in cars under 360 lbs get the flat fee instead.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I take my junk to the Frank R. Bowerman Landfill in Irvine?
No. Bowerman does not accept waste from the general public. It’s restricted to commercial haulers who hold a valid Orange County business license or California contractor’s license. For self-haul disposal, your options are Olinda Alpha in Brea or Prima Deshecha in San Juan Capistrano.
How much does it cost to dump at an Orange County landfill?
Through June 30, 2026, the rate is approximately $44 per ton, with a $5 flat fee for small loads in cars and SUVs under 360 pounds. Starting July 1, 2026, rates increase to approximately $67 per ton, and the small-load fee jumps to $15. A typical pickup truck load of household junk costs roughly $30–$70 depending on weight.
What are the landfill hours?
Olinda Alpha in Brea is open Monday through Saturday, 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Prima Deshecha in San Juan Capistrano is open Monday through Saturday, 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Both are closed Sundays and major holidays.
Where do I take paint, batteries, and old electronics?
Bring them to one of the four OC Household Hazardous Waste Collection Centers in Anaheim, Huntington Beach, Irvine, or San Juan Capistrano. Drop-off is free for Orange County residents. Centers are open Tuesday through Saturday, 9 AM to 3 PM. Do not bring hazardous materials to the landfill — they will be refused.
Can I drop off a mattress for free?
Yes, if your load contains only mattresses and no other waste. Both Olinda Alpha and Prima Deshecha accept mattress-only loads at no charge through the county’s mattress recycling program. If you mix a mattress in with other junk, standard disposal fees apply to the entire load.
Does my city offer free bulky-item pickup?
Most OC cities include 2–6 free curbside bulky-item pickups per year as part of your regular trash service. Call your trash hauler or check your city’s public works website to find out how many pickups you get, what items qualify, and how to schedule. This is often the easiest way to get rid of a few large items without driving to the dump.
Is it cheaper to haul junk myself or hire a junk removal company?
Honestly, it depends. If you have a truck, a free Saturday, and one manageable load, the dump run costs $30–$70 in fees plus your time and gas. If you don’t own a truck (rental runs $50–$100+), have multiple loads, heavy items, or hazardous materials mixed in, hiring a junk removal company usually makes more sense. We include the dump fees, labor, and cleanup in our price.
What forms of payment do the landfills accept?
Both Olinda Alpha and Prima Deshecha accept Visa, Mastercard, and American Express credit cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, cash, and checks. No Discover cards.
