Appliance Disposal in Orange County: A Reno Guide
By Alex Alquisira, co-owner of EA Junk Removal (family-run in Orange County since 2018)
Quick answer: during a home renovation in Orange County you can’t just leave an old fridge, washer, or stove at the curb. Refrigerators and freezers need their refrigerant legally recovered by a certified technician before disposal, and electronic appliances are banned from California landfills. Your real options are a utility recycling pickup, a free OC drop-off center, a donation if it still works, or a junk crew like us who sorts it for you. EA hauls appliances at $75 to $250 per item. Here’s how to do it right without slowing your remodel.
We clear appliances out of OC renovations constantly, so this is the exact playbook we walk homeowners through.
Why can’t I just throw out an old appliance during a remodel?
Two reasons, and both are law, not preference. First, refrigerators, freezers, and air conditioners contain refrigerant. Under EPA Section 608 of the Clean Air Act, that refrigerant has to be recovered by a certified technician before the unit is scrapped, because venting it into the air is illegal. A household fridge holds more than the five-pound threshold, so it does not qualify as a “small appliance” you can just toss.
Second, anything with a screen or circuit board is electronic waste. California classifies e-waste as universal waste, and under the Electronic Waste Recycling Act devices with screens over four inches (and other covered electronics) are banned from the landfill and must go to a recycler or collection center. So that old under-counter TV or smart appliance can’t go in the debris bin either.
During a reno the trap is treating appliances like drywall and lumber. They’re a separate stream with their own rules.
How do I dispose of a refrigerator in Orange County?
A working refrigerator or freezer has the best path of all: the utility will often take it for free. Southern California Edison runs a refrigerator and freezer recycling program that offers free haul-away for qualifying secondary units in working condition, and typically pays a rebate on top. Terms and the current rebate amount change, so confirm eligibility (size range, working condition, unit limits per year) and the payout directly on SCE’s program page before you schedule.
If the fridge is dead, not cooling, or doesn’t qualify for the utility program, it still needs proper refrigerant recovery. That’s where a junk crew or a certified recycler comes in. What you cannot do is drag it to the curb and hope. An improperly scrapped fridge that vents refrigerant is an EPA violation.
One more thing we get asked constantly: don’t try to “de-gas” a fridge yourself to save a step. Recovering refrigerant legally takes certified equipment and a certified technician. Puncturing a line in your driveway is both illegal and a fast way to inhale something you don’t want to. Leave that part to the utility program or a recycler who’s set up for it.
Where can I take appliances and e-waste for free in Orange County?
OC Waste & Recycling runs four Household Hazardous Waste Collection Centers that accept e-waste and universal waste from Orange County residents at no charge. They’re in Anaheim, Huntington Beach, Irvine, and San Juan Capistrano, generally open Tuesday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. A few things to know before you load the truck:
- These centers serve OC residents only. They can’t accept waste from businesses, so a contractor gutting a rental can’t use them on the customer’s behalf.
- Wipe personal data off any smart appliance or electronics before drop-off.
- You’re doing the loading, hauling, and unloading yourself, which during an active remodel is often the exact thing you don’t have time for.
The free centers are great if you have one or two items and a truck. When you’ve got a kitchen and laundry room’s worth of appliances and demo debris all at once, that’s usually when people call us instead.
Can I donate a working appliance instead of scrapping it?
Yes, and it’s the best outcome when the unit still runs. Habitat for Humanity of Orange County ReStore accepts donated working appliances at its Santa Ana and Anaheim locations and offers pickup for larger items through a donation hotline. Working appliances get resold, the proceeds fund local home builds, and you may get a tax-deductible receipt.
The catch during a renovation is condition and timing. ReStore takes items in working, resalable shape. A 15-year-old dishwasher you’re replacing because it died isn’t a donation, it’s a haul. Be honest about which bucket each item falls in, and don’t hold up your remodel waiting on a pickup slot for something that won’t be accepted.
What’s the difference between a major appliance and e-waste?
It matters for where things end up. Here’s the quick sort we use on site:
| Item | Category | Why it can’t go in the trash |
|---|---|---|
| Refrigerator, freezer, window AC | Refrigerant appliance | EPA 608 refrigerant recovery required |
| Washer, dryer, dishwasher, stove | Major appliance / scrap metal | Recyclable metal; not landfill-appropriate |
| Microwave, smart appliance, TV, monitor | E-waste (universal waste) | Banned from CA landfills under e-waste law |
| Small appliance with built-in battery | Covered e-waste (as of 2026) | Battery-embedded products now in the CEW recycling program |
Metal appliances like washers and dryers aren’t hazardous, but they’re valuable scrap and shouldn’t fill a landfill. We route those to metal recyclers. Anything with a board or battery goes to certified electronics recycling. Refrigerant units get proper recovery.
Note the 2026 change on that last table row. California’s Covered Electronic Waste program expanded this year to include battery-embedded products, so a growing list of small appliances with built-in batteries now count as covered e-waste rather than regular trash. If you’re pulling out cordless or rechargeable gear during a remodel, treat it like electronics, not landfill.
How much does appliance removal cost with EA Junk Removal?
Our appliance removal service runs $75 to $250 per item depending on the appliance, the weight, and how hard it is to get out (a second-floor fridge down a tight stairwell is more work than a garage freezer). If your renovation is generating a whole mixed load of appliances plus demo debris, it’s usually cheaper to price it by volume: a quarter truck is $200 to $300, a half truck $300 to $450, and a full truck $500 to $700. The full breakdown is on our 2026 OC price index. We’ll tell you on the quote which option saves you money.
What’s the smart order to handle appliances during a reno?
- 1. Sort by condition. Working units go to donation or the utility program. Dead units go to recycling or haul.
- 2. Book the free wins first. Schedule the SCE fridge pickup or a ReStore donation early, since those have lead times.
- 3. Batch the rest. Group dead appliances, e-waste, and demo debris so it clears in one pass instead of five trips.
- 4. Keep the refrigerant legal. Never let a fridge or AC get scrapped without recovery. Use the utility program or a crew that recycles them properly.
- 5. Clear the site. When you just need it gone so the remodel keeps moving, that’s our job.
A renovation has enough moving parts without a dead fridge and a pile of old appliances blocking the driveway. We’ve been sorting, recycling, and hauling appliances across Orange County since 2018, and we handle the legal recycling side so you don’t have to think about it.
